1939 Chris Craft Barrelback copy Brand new boat finished in July 2007. Wood epoxy construction. This is a copy of the famous Chris Craft Barrelback boat built in 1939. The Bugatti windows were only used that year and great expense has been made to follow the original design so that the boat gives you that antique feel. This model is the grandfather of the famous Riva boats made in Italy from 1950's to the 1990's. Construction 6.3 meters long 1.9 meters wide Frames made of Cambara hardwood Longitudinals made of fir Hull inside planking miranti plywood Hull outside planking okoume waterproof plywood 4 layers of 4 mm plywood on bottom 3 layers of 4 mm plywood on sides Made with cold mould technique using epoxy on each layer therefore sealing the wood. Engine longitudinal stringers made of 100 x 50 x 5mm aluminium tubing with transverse members at each end. The use of the aluminium has made the boat stronger than the original design. The inside of the hull has been coated three times with epoxy to seal it against water intrusion. The outside has been coated with two layers of fibreglass cloth mixed with epoxy to make a strong impact resistant seal. The anti-fouling is done with two layers of epoxy coating. The sides of the hull are coated with two coats of black polyurethane paint. The deck is covered with 3.5 mm mahogany planks. Maple has been used between the planks. The decks have been covered with two layers of epoxy and then two layers of ultra violet protected two component varnish. The bow cut water is made of 2 mm stainless steel as well as the stern protection. The side rub strips are stainless steel as well as the lifting eye cleats and fairleads. The engine hatch surround and hinges have been custom made from stainless steel. The windshield frame is custom made from stainless steel to match that of the original style. The vessel comes equipped with a convertible top that can be disassembled and stored behind the aft seat. The frames for the top have hinges so that the parts can fold in for storage. The decks can be protected with a custom made Burgundy coloured waterproof cover that goes the complete length of the boat. Steering System Steering system is custom made and all components are stainless steel with the exception of the BMW 6 series steering box. The system uses linkage and tie rods only therefore there are not cables to snap and lubrication is not required. The banjo steering wheel is custom made to match that of the original one. The rudder seal is above water and uses o-ring so that there is no water leaking into the boat during cruising or sitting still. The rudder is streamlined construction and balanced. The steering is very easy and does not require power assist. Propulsion The gearshift is on the floor just like it was back in 1939. It has a safety handle that locks it in position so that it is not possible for the kids to accidentally knock it into gear. This system also uses tie rods and not cables. The V6 engine comes from a 1990 Citroen XM. It has 170 horse power and uses electronic fuel injection, which makes it very fuel efficient. A velvet drive 1:1 gearbox has been adapted to the engine. The engine mounts are from Rubber Design. The oil pan has been made deeper to accommodate more oil to make sure that the engine always has oil pressure. The propeller shaft is 25 mm and uses a PSS seal that is water lubricated (dry bilge).
